Beacon’s Privacy Notice for Children and Young People

 Who we are

We are Beacon Victim Care and we give support to victims and witnesses of crime in Hertfordshire, both adults and children. To be able to do this we have to collect, store and use your personal data. Beacon is a service delivered by Catch22. Catch22’s data protection registration number is Z1473239.

What is Personal Data?

Personal Data is any information that could be used to identify you. For example this could simply be just your name and address. It could also be things such as a phone number, notes about the work we are doing with you, or an email address. Whether you are looking at our website or if we are supporting you, there are things we need to know to be able to help you. Some of the information we collect could be quite sensitive and personal as we talk about what has happened and how you are feeling.

Where do we get your personal data from and what do we do with it?

We get your personal data from you! If you are under 16 then your parent or carer will need to give this to us. While being supported by us we will ask you for different bits of personal information, for example where you go to school. We ask for this information so we can help you in the best way. We’d only ask or take this information if we had your (or your parent/carer’s) permission to. As this data is yours and private, we are very careful about what we do with it.

What information do we collect when you access the website?

When you look at or use our website we have to collect and store certain personal data. We may collect, store and use the following kinds of personal data:

• Information about your computer and how you visit or use the website, including your IP address, geographical location, browser type, referral source, length of visit and number of page views. We do some of this using cookies (See below for what cookies are).

What are Cookies and how do we use them?

They act like messages between web servers and web browsers, and help with how the website runs. Cookies help us to:

• Make our website work as you’d expect

• Improve the speed/security of the site

• Allow you to share pages with social networks like Facebook and Twitter

• Store answers from surveys that we may ask you to fill in from time to time

• Continuously improve the website for you We do not use cookies to:

• collect any personal data (without your express permission)

• share data with advertising networks

• share data with third parties.

Most browsers allow you to reject all cookies, while some browsers allow you to reject just third party cookies. In Internet Explorer you can refuse all cookies by clicking ‘Tools’, Internet Options’, ‘Privacy’ and selecting ‘Block all cookies’ using the sliding selector. Blocking all cookies will, however, have a negative impact upon the usability of many websites, including this one. If you would like help doing this please ask a parent/carer to help you.

How do we keep your information safe?

We are always trying to make sure your data is secure and used as it should be. We work to stop your data being lost, used incorrectly, or changed incorrectly. We will store all the personal information you give us on our safe and firewall protected servers. A firewall is a system that watches and checks who is accessing the website and your data, and makes sure your data isn’t accessed by an intruder! We try our best to keep all your data from accessing the website secure, however as the internet can often be insecure it cannot be promised.

Will we ever have to share your data?

Beacon will not normally give your personal information to other services or professionals. We might share information about you with any of our employees or the people that look at our data. However this is only when needed for the reasons as set out in this privacy policy, and so we can best help you and our clients. In addition to this, we may share information about you:

• to the extent that we are required to do so by law

• in connection with any legal proceedings, such as for court

• in relation to our legal rights (including information about fraud and credit risks)

• to prevent harm to you or another person.

This is important to us as we have to keep you and others safe. Except the above, we will not provide your information to third parties without your consent.
